Roads netin Iraq

A brief of Roads net in Iraq

The general land road net was developed from earth caravan roads at the beginning of the establishment of the Iraqi government, to a new network of paved roads in addition to construct      a large number of new bridges all over the country.

The total length of the external road net (outside the border of Baghdad mayoralty and municipality) is about 42000 Km including:-

The expressways (the expressway No (1) and Abu Garib expressway).

The arterial roads, which links the centers of the governorates and boarder exits .

The secondary roads, which links between the province and district.

The rural roads, which links the housing complexes in the countries and villigies with the secondary and arterial roads.

The following table declares the length of the different types of paved roads network up to 2004.

No

Class of Road

Length (Km)
1. The expressways 1084
2. The arterial roads 11000
3. The secondary roads 15200
4. Rural roads 3700
5. The border roads 11000

(SCRB) is going on executing the plan of roads construction specially the rural roads to approach the international criteria in respected of roads length according to the population density

(100 p/Km2 of population density needs 1 km/km2 of roads).

The roads net also includes 1200 fixed bridges located on the Tigris & Euphrates rivers and its tributaries, valleys and railroads in addition to (60) floating bridges.

(scrb) is going on constructing the new bridges and replacing the floating bridges with the fixed ones.

This huge net of roads and bridges most of which are being constructed during the seventieth and eightieth decades are in need of continuous maintenance works to endure the axle loads and resists the environmental conditions since this net work are being neglected particularly in maintenance during the latest two decades as a result of wars, and no funds had been insured to maintain them, since 2001 (SCRB) started the implementation of its plan to maintain the roads

(As 80% of the existing roads were in bad condition and in need of maintenance).

The Ministry of Construction and Housing through (scrb) yearly prepares a plan for the maintenance of roads and Bridges all over the country and the execution shall be accordingly and as per a schedule of priorities, importancy and available funds.
